Turning K-3/3 into street camera :)

I was wondering about getting GRIII but as I turned to be tight on money it is not possible this year so I want to expand a bit my K-3/3. Or compact it

I have 20-40 Ltd but despite being small it is still pretty large so I am thinking about getting either 21 or 40mm Limiteds for slim package. 15 and 70 (I have both) are bit too extreme. I would love to get both lenses, but this year it is last buy and I can get only one. Money needed for something else then photography.

So, which one to get first? 20 or 40. It will be used primarily on streets, walkarounds when I am on holiday trip - for casual photography.

F or FA 28mm f2.8 would be my preference for a street lens on a crop body. 21 is too wide, 40 is weird to me on a crop body, too tight.

I love a good 28mm on APS-C.

Can't help thinking that the K-3/20-40 might be best to keep for now as it is so flexible a combination. I kept mine and sold my 20 and 40. Then saved up for GRiii which is a brilliant camera - so much better than its predecessors.

When I had the K-3/20-40 on a neck strap I didn't think the same way as I do now. Switching to a wrist strap has completely changed how I use it. This might change things for you ...

Being that you were looking at the GR III, the 21mm would be close to its FOV I think. It will be slightly tighter than the GR so no, I don't think it will be too wide.

I think that if budget is tight, a K-S1 can sometimes be found quite cheap and is much smaller than the K-3III, while still being very capable. With the DA 21 it can fit a jacket pocket... And it doesn't really look much like a DSLR.

That is nice idea, worth trying (and cheap )

The 21 versus 40 is a personal choice that depends on your tastes in FoV (21 gets more of the background and has more depth of field) and your personal comfort in approaching the subject (40 lets you be a bit further from people and provides more subject separation).

Your 20-40 gives you a unique opportunity to try both focal lengths before your buy another lens. If you go out and shoot a bunch of street shots, zooming as you see fit, you can see which focal lengths you use most. You might naturally tend to use the 20 end or the 40 end or discover that you gravitate toward the middle and should buy something like a 28. Another test is to set the zoom at some focal length and tape it down and then spend some time shooting to see which focal gets more keepers and has less frustrating lost opportunities.

Either approach will help you find a prime focal length that works for you (or discover you can't live without the zoom).

Good luck!

DA 40 XS. Trust me, I've used a similar combo for street photos. compact, lightweight, excellent results

The 40mm is great on my KP for this sort of work, so I guess it'd work as well on a K-3iii … I've not bothered to try it.
Having said all that, for sheer immediacy or spontaneity (and somewhat less money), a pre-focussed m/f 28mm or 35mm at f/8 or thereabouts can be an excellent point-&-shoot combination for "street" work on any apsc DSLR
Good luck

@photoptimist - I've done a month of SiC with 20-40 set to 28 I have this lens for some time and I tend to gravitate toward 35 and below, I rarely use longer focal lengths, but on street I pretty often take 70mm cause I am pretty shy so I like to stay away from people but 70 is bit too long for European tight streets. That is why I got idea of getting 40mm.

Ideally I would get both, but as I do not have money I need to choose one I like shooting primes, I got 20-40 mostly because I wanted WR lens for winter and autumn outdoor shooting.

If only they made a K-02 😊. But it seems like to 21 would be the ticket.

21 on a k3iii gives a similar perspective to fa 31 on k1. The FA 28 and FA 35 or DA 35 are additional options to consider. The 40 is nice but long for a lot of people in street shooting. I’ve used it and like it. The 21 is similar to 30-35mm rangefinders which are some of the best street cameras. 20-40 is a good way to decide.

My KP + 21 is my street camera when I'm not carrying my GR. It has five axis stabilisation, better battery life and with the pancake lens is still discrete despite being a DSLR. Good high ISO performance means you don't need a fast lens. Of course the K3 iii will have much better specs even if slightly larger.

I have the K3iii with the 20-40 and before I got it I was thinking to get the 21 or 40 for my k70, but now I can't justify the expense to have a redundant focal length only for size. For me a better choice was a 35/2.8 macro limited. It gives me a smaller package with macro capability. Another lens to consider is the 70/2.4 limited. Its pretty compact, shorter than the 20-40, with added reach.

If I was going out with a body and one prime on APSc (I never do, so this is pure speculation)
I would seriously consider the 35DA Macro,
It's such good versitile package, near normal focal length, decently fast, close focusing ability, sharp, compact.

I have 35 and 70 😀 As I said, 70 is too long. 35 is a choice, true, never really considered those lens for anything else than Macro.
