What did I find in my closet?

All,

My fiancee received a Spotmatic II and three lenses as a hand-me-down from her father some years ago. Today, I dragged the box out of the closet. Here are the lenses. They are all the M42 screw mount. What have I got? Are these good lenses?

Images are attached. The markings are:

1. Vivitar 28mm 1:2.8 No. 62794 AUTO
2. Super-Multi-Coated TAKUMAR 1:1.4/50 5844507 ASAHI OPT. CO., JAPAN
3. Auto Vivitar TELE ZOOM LENS 1:3.8 85-205mm No. 30826

They seem to need a little bit of TLC. The 28mm has some dust blobs inside somewhere, and the 50mm has had a couple of screws come out and they are knocking around between the front element and the UV filter that's attached.

Can I take these apart and fix them up? I'm quite handy, but I'm no magician. (I looked at the thread where the fellow took apart his modern 18-55 autofocus zoom, and putting that back together seems way out of my league.)

What an exciting weekend! I think that it could be a blast to play with these guys.

Many thanks,

Reid

You found lenses and my friend found homosexuality...these closets are are highly inconsistent

Don't actually have any of these lenses but I do have a few Takumar lenses which I use regularly on my K10D, check the Takumar Lens Club for samples of greatness. The Vivitar 28mm would also be decent, not sure about the tele zoom though.

S-M-C Tak 50 1.4

One of the best 50's IMHO... I love mine.

The S-M-C Tak 50 1.4 is a $100 lens that gives you $1500 images. Congrats!

(Also, welcome to the forum from a fellow Minneapolite! )

I prefer the 55 1.8, but either way that Takumar is golden, please enjoy it, greatly.

No need to disassemble any of them. Just normal cleaning and enjoy the windfall.

Any reason why you prefer the 55/1.8 over the much higher rated 50/1.4? Just curious 'cause the 55/1.8 is quite a bit cheaper than the 50/1.4. and most users seem to prefer the SMC 50/1.4 ...

I'd never opened up a lens before, but last night I opened up a Cosina 50/1.8 lens, my first ever, which took me 3 hours to put them back! Got the lens cheap to practice lens surgery. I took out each and every screw and small metal piece, all the glass elements too. Had some hard time putting the shutter blades back to order, almost gave up in the process, but I was glad that I put them all back in order. It's only after this that I know the control/movement mechanism of the aperture ring, shutter blades, focusing, aperture lever...

It's really not as hard as you think. The loose screw is most likely right under the decorative trim ring around the front lens element (with those words marked on), which can be easily taken off by using a rubber eraser (pushing the ring CCW w/ the eraser).

Just like I changed the light seals of my SuperProgram camera -- my first time ever, now I'm very confident to seal another camera or open up another manual lens

BTW, here is a link on how to strip down a Super Takumar 50/1.4 lens:

Good luck

The zoom isn't terrible, but it's nothing to write home about. it's just like most Viv gear at that time...adequate.

AND so you also have a Spottie II? Get some film, it'll take just about any battery that fits...

Trust me taking apart and putting these lenses back together will be a lot easier than the route I took with the 18-55.

I own both and do tend to use the 55/1.8 more than the 50/1.4. I have a couple of reasons, neither of which have the slightest thing in the world to do with their relative optical merits.

1. I own other 50mm lenses as well, but when I see "55mm" in the EXIF I always know exactly which lens I used.

2. More importantly, I'm a contrarian and get greater satisfaction using the "underdog" lens that most pass over in favor of the 50/1.4.

And despite bearing the stigma of once having been a kit lens and hence being cheaper than dirt and more common than stupidity, it is a fine lens with nothing to apologize to anyone for. I reach for it with confidence, knowing that the chances of me underperforming it are infinitely higher than the chances of it underperforming me.

Thanks for the reply and explanation. Those are some excellent photos. I guess it's the photographer, not just the lens then
