Damaged 150-450

Just received my lens and the foot has been broken off during shipping. It’s obviously going back. My question is how often does this happen? It’s gonna be about a month turn around to get my refund.

Where did you get the lens from? Seems like a long time to get a refund.

The lens is supposed to come well-padded in a durable case, so not likely that it would break. Was the external box damaged?

Shipping box was fine, this is how it was when I opened the box and took it out of the case.

I haven't seen that one before! Usually it's a metal block in the handle that breaks, rather than the anchor on the lens body. Looks like a simple 4-screw fix if they send you a replacement anchor plate.

This cast metal they use appears to be problematic. Brittle.

My understanding is you have to get the entire lock ring assembly, but m just gonna return it and have them send me another one.

I would at least put the lens on camera and do a couple of test shots, you may have an excellent copy of that lens. You might want to keep it and just ask for a replacement part if everything else is good.

There have been a few cases of this reported:
D-FA 150-450 & 70-200 broken tripod foot: a DIY solution - PentaxForums.com
Tripod mount replacement - PentaxForums.com
People other than the original poster reported similar problems in the same thread, with the foot, or of the lens itself "coming apart". All very scary.
I have been using my 150-450mm fairly regularly over the last 14 months. Fingers crossed.

Count me in as someone who's also never seen that exact failure.

I had the joining cleat inside the tripod foot break (the part that marries with the opposing cleat on the lens).
I fabricated a replacement out of 2024-T351 aluminum and ordered an OEM as a backup.

Comparatively, those are far easier fixes than what you're dealing with.

I think I’d be sending the lens back for replacement, too. A fracture like that suggests impact damage as a likely cause, which would make me wonder about what internal damage may have been sustained,

The foot on mine came damaged and I got a partial refund since I was happy with the lens and I think the foot is identical to that from the DFA 70-200 which I already owned (it seemed to fit).

Oddly enough, the foot was damaged despite being shipped in a separate bag within the box. I do wonder if the lens being shipped with the foot mounted creates a much higher risk of the mounting being damaged.

I had exactly the same thing, ordered directly at Ricoh Germany.
It was well packed with no damage to the box. But the lens is so heavy that the bubbel plastic in the overbox was busted.

Of course could send it back and receive a new one. (didn't trust the optics because of the fall it must have had during transport, never tested it though)
