Shutter speed problem???

ok!! I got the new K20d camera as and early christmas present.

The kit lens is listed as F3.5-5.6 (as the aperture???). When I adjust that number using the rear wheel knob I can only get the number down to 5.6. I can also get the number up into the 30's which takes severel seconds to stop.

I know this number has occasionally gone down to 4.0 but don't know why or how to get it down to 3.5. I'd like to take the family christmas pic's of the kid's and the quick shutter speed is critical.

How do I get it down?

on zooms the lower F# correspond to the wider end of the focal length, at the tele end the max F stop is the higher #. For instance, if you have a da 18-55mm f3.5-5.6, at 18mm the max aperture is 3.5 and the max aperture for 55mm is 5.6 and in between is somewhere in between those two f stop.

For the love of god use auto, you have too much to learn before Xmas so for now let the camera do the thinking then figure it out in the new year. You don't want to use f/3.5, DOF is too narrow and the kit lens is soft at that f-stop.
