Is this lens any good with my new K200D?

Hi. I'm John and I live in New Zealand. I'm new to the forums and new to Pentax gear. I just bought a K200D for Christmas.
It came with a Sigma 18-50 lens which I understand is not the best.
I have a friend selling a Pentax film camera (Z70) that has a Pentax SMC FA 1:4 -5.6 70mm - 200mm lens on it.
He says I can have the lens for $40 if I take the camera with it!
Can anyone tell me if this lens is reasonable quality and if I buy it and use it with the K200D will all the features of the lens work? (I mean autofocus, A and so on)
Thanks.

Welcome! This forum has a lens review database; the lens you are mentioning is here:

Pentax Lens Review Database - 70-200mm F4-5.6

As for your last question: yes, all functions will work except for the power zoom.

Does the Sigma give you the results you want, this is the only real way to judge a lens.

Gidday Mate !
Nice choice the k200.
New Zealand price makes the eyes water but better than canikon
Pity we have to sell house to buy gear down here.
did you get nz or parallel ?

amazing how many old Kiwi spotmatic users come out of the woodwork when they see the Pentax

All pentax thread and bayonet lenses will work one way or another.
Have a look at the database

cheers
Pete

Hi Pete,

thanks for the reply and Merry Christmas. Where are you? I'm Christchurch.
I take it you have a K200D as well?
I thought I got a good buy - tell me if I didn't!
It was a parallel import and I got it at a reputable camera shop in a big city mall.
K200D with Sigma 18-50 lens (I know its meant to be a poor lens but it will do to get started with my first DSLR) plus: 2Gb Sandisk Ultra II memory card, $100 worth of photo printing and a 2 year warrranty ..
all for $799 (NZ)
I thought it was a good deal.
cheers,
John

Cheers Mate,
In Wangavegus here
No I have got a K100D which is more or less a k200D but with the 6mp sensor and no weather sealing.
Thats a great deal you got, best nz dealer warranty one I found was $1200 body only
Pick up some old Pentax lenses ! It's worth getting the thread/K mount adapter so you can mount that super old takumar glass
Pete
