Well, the f/2.8 will definitely have much less DOF especially with a telephoto shot, than will f/4, so with f/2.8 you might only get one very small point where focus is sharp vs f/4 which will provide a bit more area of sharpness. And, it is harder to get razor sharpness as good wide open with faster lenses, but at the same time, when shooting action, the f/2.8 can provide double the shutter speed to stop action and possibly get better results than f/4 can manage.

Yea no doubt it’s still a very competent lens. And may have an advantage like you say in fast action photography.
