Bad weather (which is common here in Poland) is keeping me from going out with Limiteds and I started to consider getting a WR prime. Now the main question - is there any normal prime with seals? For APS-C so 35-40mm? I have 20-40 so that is saving me, but I like primes and I am seriously considering streamlining my lens collection (all 6) as I rarely use anything other then normal focal length unless I do SiC

In the end I want to keep 20-40, 60-250 and one prime. Is it possible? Or are only WR option now 21, 50 and 55?

Could mount the FA 85.

As well in APSC you could mount the DFA 100 or the DA*200 or 300 but they're probably not what you want.

There is a "D FA large aperture wide angle prime lens" on the road map to be released 2022 or later. Probably something like D FA* 35/1.4 in line with D FA* 50/1.4 and D FA* 85/1.4. But it has been on the road map for many years, so it is difficult to know when it may be released.

50mm primes are indeed veeeery expensive. I bought a new 55mm many years ago for reasonable price for about € 375. I do the same with the new *50mm. In both cases it is a stock clearance. Still the *50mm is not that affordable, but as I aim to get a K-1 II I better get the FF lenses to go with it for a more reasonable price, considering the prices of Pentax branded material are going up and up. As you own the 20-40mm, as do I, think of it as a stack of 21 primes. It is very good, it is a small lens where the *55mm and the *50mm are quite heavy and that is not a pleasure on a lighter camera.

Currently the sealed primes are the DFA 21 limited, DFA *50, DA *55, DFA *85, and DFA 100 macro. The DA *200 and 300 are sealed as well. As someone else mentioned, there will probably be a DFA *35 f1.4 down the road, but it will probably be a good sized lens (and very expensive).

I've been out in rainy weather with the 18-135. I try not to use the zoom much in those situations, just keep it at whatever FL is appropriate. The 16-85 is probably a better IQ image, but in the rain does it matter too much?
In those situations it's usually field work so instead of the (not WR) ring flash and FA100 macro I used the 18-135 and 201AF flash, which worked better than I would have anticipated for field macro.

I know it's not a prime, but it's an option you should consider.

Yes, I search for normal/very short tele for APS-C, so 100+ is too long. Weight and size are irrelevant, I just want a sealed prime cause Limiteds limit (pun intended) my prime activities during fall, winter and spring.

As you own the 20-40mm, as do I, think of it as a stack of 21 primes.

I treat it as 30mm with a bit of tweaking room, but when I have it I tent to use zoom instead of thinking around limitations. It is great for museums and such (my 15mm is very underused now) but I like to force myself to think when I am just walking around searching for something nice to photograph.

Hmm... maybe there will be some announcement during 27 meetings (doubt it) or in February. Ugh, Pentax and announcements

The 20-40 is currently your best bet. The DFA 21 and 50 are the closest primes in focal length to what you want but both are far from a normal lens on apsc.

Edit: the easy, but not inexpensive way to deal with this is to buy a k-1 and the DFA 50… but if personally stick to using the HD DA 20-40.

I do not want K-1. Maybe K-1 Mk III if it ever comes and has K-3 Mk III AF.


And yes, I suppose you are right, I will stick with 20-40. It is really a shame that there is no DA normal/FA wide lens that is sealed. Maybe we will get this FA* 35mm next year

It would be nice to have more choice of WR primes, I agree.
Since you want a wide angle, sticking with the 20-40mm WR is probably the least expensive option. Since you are on APS-C, the other option is the DA 16-85, which I really like. I do wish the DA 10-17mm was WR, it's a great lens.

Have you considered using any sort of rain cover? Depending on how heavily the rain is coming down, it might be a good idea even with a WR combo.

No, I never use covers. If lens says it is weather resistant I expect it to be (especially as I buy new one), same for cameras.

As for 16-85 - yeah, I considered it as vacation lens. Still on my "I want it" list, but for now I am rather happy with range of 20-40, and if I want more reach there is always 60-250. So it will have to wait at least until next vacation season


I suppose for my prime issue I can cross fingers with hope that Pentax will give at least some sort of timetable about new lens

20-40mm was my suggestion also.
Another is the DA 40mm f2.8 XS, not WR, but there is not much lens openings that might catch rain on this pancake lens....

For wide angle the DA* 11-18/2.8 is an excellent option. The DFA 21 is another option. But neither of these are “normal range” WR lenses.
