On a camera like the K-S2 I would not get the PLM version of the 55-300 due to the mount not being completely compatible. I'd instead go for the older DA 55-300, probably the DA-L version, used off ebay for around $100 USD.

That’s inaccurate. The k-s2 is fully capable using KAF4 lenses. It may require a firmware update if the body isn’t using the latest firmware for that model.

You're correct; I looked up the K-S2 from new with its support for KAF2 and knew that was an issue. I didn't remember the firmware update but did independently research that after getting your reply. Seems like this isn't an issue afterall.

I might still go for the older 55-300 as a taste-test method for getting into those kinds of focal lengths and then going forward with something like the PLM or another lens like the 60-250.
