If you want a wide prime, I would just assume faster and wider is better!

Manual focus?

I don't think Pentax ever made a dog in 24-28mm, though according to some there are better 28's available. Splitting hairs perhaps - though I do find the 35 Takumar has something, a concentration of image, the 28's don't quite reach. I can recommend the SMC-A 28/2.8 as an excellent lens, with the A compatibility. I also have two Takumars, a Super and a SMC 3.5, and between the three there's not much to choose between, IQ wise.

I've never managed to get a 24mm, perhaps it will be a goal for '09.

I've got the K 24 2.8 and like it a lot. Check the lens review database for further opinions:

You haven't said what camera you plan to use your new wide on, just remember on the new DSLR's 24mm or 28mm ain't that wide.

There was a 20mm f2.8 series A version made if you can find one.

Regarding the SMC Takumars, my understanding is that the initial K-mount releases were *very* closely related to the screwmount releases at the time. Usability isn't that different on a digital body. You might be on the lookout for bargains but I wouldn't assume that they would necessarily be better.

Supposedly Sigma had some decent manual-focus 24's that I imagine would sell for half the price.

If you're planning to use these on a digital Pentax then you'll find that they're not all what wide. 28mm is very nearly a "normal" focal length on the smaller APS-C sensor.

Don't look over the M 28/3.5, I love mine, a very nice lens. I also have a Super Takumar 28/3.5 which has a certain way of rendering textures that I love but the M 28/3.5 sees a bit more use just because I don't have to dig out the adapter to use it. I had a K 28/3.5 for a short while before sending to one of my sons. I bought it in a batch deal off Craigslist, shot a couple of pics, then included it in a kit I put together for my kid. I didn't really use it enough to come to a conclusion about it but it was a nice lens. The M 28/3.5 can be bought pretty cheap and it's a performer.
