[QUOTE=SpecialK;434041]I have the previous version, still available at Cameta Camera.

Yeah I saw that, and since I don't need macro capabilities, the original 18-50 is still at the top of my list.

Jewelltrail: thanks for passing along those links to the reviews.

From the reviews I've been reading of the Tamron 17-50 and Sigma 18-50 and 17-70, most people say they are a big step up from the 18-55 Pentax kit lens. Aside from the obvious upgrade in speed, would most people agree?

Vote for the Sigma 18-50 2.8

I have the latest version of the Sigma 18-50 and I love the lens.

Nothing but great pics.

The question comes down to how wide and who's build you prefer.

I have the Sigma 18-50 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8 and am very happy with look, feel and pics.

Joe: Thanks for the feedback on the 18-50. I actually don't own any 3rd party lenses so I don't have a brand preference yet. As far as the zoom range, the wider the better, but even the 24-60 might work.

Sigma

I may get an argument on this but in general I see Sigma as having better build quality and the IQ can go either way on a lens by lens basis.

Some don't like the high end finish of the Sigma but I do. I'd recommend seeing one in the flesh since liking the finish seems to be a personal thing.

I'm not saying the build quality on Tamron lenses is inadequate just not as nice as the Sigmas. I have a Tamron 28-300 that I used as a travel lens and I couldn't kill it. But when I have the Sigmas on my camera people want to know what lens I'm using or make comments that I must have money.

Here is a pic of my cat Chaz at 18mm f8 with a bounce flash from the Sigma

Many options from Sigma

The more research I do, the more Sigma zooms I come across. Has anyone tried the 17-35 f/2.8-4 or the 28-70 f/2.8-4?

Sigma had a DG EX 15-30mm f3.5-4.5 that was pretty good. It had the dual focus system. I opted for the 20-40mm f2.8. since it was faster. I like using the dual focus system on these lenses. Unfortunately, both are hard to find in Pentax mount but show up occasionally. I wouldn't get the 28-70mm because I don't think it is wide enough, otherwise, may as well go with the FA 28-70mm f4.

The 20-40 2.8 sounds ideal, but I can't find it anywhere. Did you get it on eBay?
