Many thanks to Simons's utak (Pentax Member @utak) for his excellent series of wonderful videos.

In his latest video on the Takumar 100mm f/2, he presents a comprehensive overview of this rare lens. His thorough research and in-depth analysis is underscored by a calm, methodical presentation style, and his tone and cadence keep the viewer engaged. The many images illustrate his points very well.

The video is educational and interesting for those who appreciate vintage lenses, and it even presents a few lessons in photographic technique.

Really, really well done, IMO.

- Craig

Interesting lens and well made video.

I'm not convinced by the focus on the shape of individual highlights (bokeh balls) though. This is imho at best a secondary aspect of bokeh. The aggregated effect on general out of focus areas and transitions is more interesting and relevant for photography. It seems to me sawtooth and ninja star apertures can play a part in creating a sort of subtly textured or painterly look that is very pleasing.

Its worth getting hold of the "definitive pentax collectors guide" by Gerjan van Oosten, in my opinion....it will probably sell out like the previous version did. It has loads of info on the old Takumars. Even if you use the more modern Pentax primes, its a nice book to look at the evolution of the lens diagrams. These 100's used to have optical formulae similar to the M 85 f2 Sonar lens diagram. The M 100 2.8 split the rear group up, creating a sharper lens. There was a review listed the other day for the Takumar 105, on Vintage Lens Test: Asahi Pentax SMC Takumar 105mm f/2.8.
