Pentax DA 55-300/ 18-55 DA II Impressions

In a continuation of sorts from this thread:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-dslr-discussion/45364-k20d-arrived...pressions.html

My oh my the 55-300 lens is good. Right away, the excellent contrast and very decent bokeh stood out like a sore thumb. Just excellent for a lens for this price. Not very much CA at f5.6-f5.8 either. Sharp enough at this max aperture for my taste, stopping down does improve things a bit but overall not a huge amount.

Yep I love it, right out of the box, great buy!

The 18-55 II is also excellent for a kit lens. Plenty sharp in the corners at f5.6, and even better at f7.1. Great light and fast focusing lens, for only 60.00 (the price of a decent dinner) this lens is an excellent value.

I just got my 55-300 on monday, but I haven't been able to go out and give it a good test yet. I like it so far.

One thing that is a bit odd is that the focus ring has a noticeable gearing sound when I turn it.

I have had the 55-300 mm for about a month now. And I love it. The DOF one can manage with it is sometimes amazing!

I bought my wife the K200D + 18-55 II Kit lens for Christmas. So far, so great! I'm just waiting for my wallet to recover some before I buy her the 55-300. I'm real glad to hear that everyone still thinks this lens is so good. She's got a cruise vacation coming in February and this time she won't need to take my K10D & Sigma 17-70. I can't wait to see the results she gets with her own set up this time.
Happy New Year to all,
Brian

Good choices. The next logical step is the FA 50mm f/1.4.

It thought it was the 10-17 fisheye. I guess you can't have too many lenses covering 50mm, though :-)

The most significant thing about the 50mm is the "f/1.4" part. The 18-55 and 55-300 are both slow lenses. Other benefits of the FA 50 are the low cost, classic portrait length and excellent IQ.
Mostly the F1.4 though. Everyone needs at least one fast lens. OTOH one fisheye would be one more than I need.
