Bargain Table Finds

Found these lenses at the bargain table of my local camera shop. Paid $110 for both. Im still learning, so could someone tell me if these are any good? Ive never heard of "Promaster"

Promaster Spectrum7 60-300mm 1:4-5.6
Promaster Spectrum7 16-35mm 1:3.5-4.5

I can hear something rattle around in the wide angle lens when I rotate it, but it the lens functions correctly, so...?

as far as I know some promaster lenses are manufactured by tamron. which ones I do not know. all I really know about promaster is that its a rather cheap brand (price wise) I cant comment on quality. I have heard the 70-300mm isnt very contrasty and esxibits strong purple fringing. as for yor lenses I cannot say. personally I wouldnt have paid that much. sorry I cant really be of much help, hopefully someone with more experience with the brand can chime in.

You weren't robbed but they probably aren't that great, you did well to get a wide angle zoom that cheap. Keep away from the either end of their zoom range, ie use the 60-300 as an 80-280 and the 16-35 as a 20-30 and use them at about f8 and you should get reasonable images from them.
If you can't get reasonable images by using them that way then I'm afraid I'm going to have to retract my statement and say that you were robbed.

I have two Promaster lenses, the Spectrum7 19-35 (manual-focus auto-exposure) and their newer 70-300 AF zoom (which appears to be identical to the Tamron model).

The 19-35 zoom is listed in the third-party database at : PentaxForums.com Third-Party Pentax Lens Review Database - Spectrum 7 19-35 F1/3.5-4.5 MC Manual Focus. I apparently bought it sometime to use with my old K1000 film body, put it in a closet, and forgot about until my wife noticed it last year (this after she got my a K100D for Xmas). Seems to be an OK lens, though I haven't used it too much.

The 70-300 has worked out well for me. I haven't noticed too much in the way of purple fringing, and the picture sharpness has been generally acceptable. I bought it to shoot marching band pictures from upper level of a college stadium, and you can see the expressions on the kids' faces from way up there. As I say, IQ was acceptable to me, others may have different perceptions. This is a 100% crop from one, no post processing done. No idea if the Spectrum7 zoom is similar to the current one, but I bet it'll be acceptable for many shots... Especially at the price!

Jim
