A noob-like question about lens mechanics

I have been searching for a good all round, low lght portrait lens, and have decided on the SMCP-F 50mm f1.4 ( which I never would have reached without this fantastic forum, thankyou )

I understand that this will equate to roughly 70mm on my DSLR, my question is, does my 70-300mm Sigma DG have the same scale, becuase if not, then the 50mm will be = to 70mm on the sigma, which is too much for a close range portrait lens...

No doubt you can see now why I couldn't type this into google

If anyone has a clue what i'm talking about, then please give a newbie a break

thanks,

Short answer: yes. The crop factor for FOV will apply if your lens was designed for use on a camera that is full frame and you are using that lens on a body that has a APS-C sensor. What you want to do your google search on is the following term: "APS-C Crop Factor"

Now that you have your answer - buy the lens! The 50mm f1.4 is one of Pentax's best lenses and you will not be disappointed by its performance.

a 50 on digital equals approximately what a 75looks like on a film camera.

On any one camera, a 50 will always be wider than a 70. Personally, 50mm is perfect for me on a film camera but too tight on a digital camera, but it still gives great results and amazing images.

My opinion would be to look at the DA* 16-50mm lens. The fixed 50mm will always seem a little too long after a while.

I have 2 50mm lenses and sometimes wish I had the 16-50 myself to get the wider angle.

He's looking for a low light, portrait lens. The 50mm F1.4 should be perfect. Plus there were no quality issues with the 50mm like there have been with the 16-50mm.

Check his profile - he has the kit lens for slower, wider shooting.
