I have been through 3 & I am waiting for B&H to send #4.
What's the response from B&H like after you return it three times?
And btw ... who pays for all the additional shipping? If buyer has to, it'd be tough on overseas buyers.

I got the first 2 from 17th Street, after the 2nd bad one I just got a refund & ordered the next one from B&H hoping since they were a large volume dealer I would get one from the "second batch".
The first one from B&H was also a 9xxx SN & was no better than the first 2, so I am trying one more time. I have been paying shipping to return the lens but they are not charging me to ship the replacement since the lenses have been defective. The good news is that the price of the lens has gone down $150.00 so I will get that refunded when they ship the replacement.
If this next one is a dud I guess I will give up or try the Sigma 18-50. I'll let you guys know what happens.

Cheers.

Waiting on my third...

I ended up ordering the sigma 18-50 f/2.8
Sigma | 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC Macro Lens for Pentax | 581109 | B&H

and it is a much better lens than my 16-50 DA* BUT i do miss those 2mm...

Hopefully the third time is a charm on the DA*16-50

Bought mine from Beach Camera, found centering defects, but instead of sending it back to them I sent it to Pentax service headquarters in Westminster, Colorado.
I'm hoping Pentax will get it right this time.

Forgive me joining in here, but what exactly are the problems with the 16-50? I presume you're referring to the DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 with SDM?

I got mine a few days ago, from the Digital Camera Warehouse here in Australia. Bought online.

No problems so far, but I haven't really given it a good workout. What should I be looking for exactly? How do I test it to reveal any problems?

I also have the DA* 50-135 bought a couple of weeks earlier, and it is fabulous - no problems at all. Fast, silent, and sharp as a tack.

So can somebody tell me what sort of problems I should be looking for with the 16-50 before it's too late to return it? Of course, I could have a good one.....

Just do a test with a newspaper , focussed perfectly , wide open and if you are pleased with the results , everything is ok I guess...

Yup - did that one as soon as I got the lens. Sharp as a tack edge-to-edge. At 2.8

Stopped down also excellent - sharpest was between f4 - f11. Stopped all the way down was still very sharp.

I guess I must have got a good one

It sounds like you got a winner. With the 3 I have had so far, I didn't even need to do a "newspaper test". I just took some general shots @ different f-stops & anything above F5.6 was unusable. Not just soft, but out of focus. Number 4 arrives today & if this one is bad I am going to give the Sigma 18-50 a try.

What's the first few digits of the SN on your lens? Mine have all been 9xxx.

Congrats, Pete. Sounds like you did get a winner. When this lens is built properly, it seems like a damn good one. When it is not (which seems to occur at an alarmingly high rate) it is not even as good as the kit lens.

Mine starts with 90164xx

I'll give it another full test using resolution cards etc over the next couple of days, work permitting.

PS: Just gave it another quick go before leaving for work, using a magazine with TINY font. I used f/2.8 at 16mm then at 50 mm - sharp edge to edge. I then used f/16 at 16mm then 50mm - same - sharp as a tack.

I didn't have time to download the photos to the PC, but using the camera's zoom function, I zoomed to maximum magnification, and scrolled around the picture - could read every word and letter with no fuzziness or blur. And we're talking TINY font here, taken from about 1 meter away. I framed the magazine at right, left, top, and bottom of 4 separate pictures for each test, as at the 16mm end, it didn't fill the frame from 1 metre away. But right to the edges each time were clear as a bell.

Still looks to me like I got lucky, huh? That must be a first!
