Amen to that!

Yea when i bought my K10D in December the information was that Tamron absolutely was not going to produce the 17-50 in Pentax mount. (Of course that was the lens I really wanted!) The DA 16-50 seemed like the only game in town. So now that many of us are saddled with problematic DA 16-50s, NOW Tamron decides to come out with it.

I'm with ''never'' Can you post the exif data?
16mm, F/2.8, shutter speed 1/180, ISO 100 for the first image and
50mm, F/2.8, shutter 1/90, ISO 100 on the second. Both were shot about 2 feet or so from the newspaper.
My SN is 90196XX.
thanks for the replies!

The tamron has become my choice, it has sample variation, but not as bad as sigma and certainly not what seems like trying to win a lottery in getting a good 16-50...

I looked up the Tamron 17-50 on pbase just to get an idea of what it can do with the C & N bodies and I am very impressed.

I can't help but wonder if the problems Pentax has been having with the 16-50, in addition to customer demand, played a role in prompting Tamron to come out with the 17-50 in the Pentax mount. Obviously, these companies have to keep up with what the other is doing.

Competition is a wonderful thing. I do not think Pentax has been forthright in their problems with the DA* 16-50 and they deserve to get their clocks cleaned by competing lenses.

Wow Andy! FWIW, I'd have actually considered those images quite acceptable compared to the lens I just sent in! No comparison!

Opinions on my DA* 16-50mm (just some test shots, not of newspaper)

I was wondering if I could get the opinions of other users on the quality of my 16-50mm.

I just did some test shots and for the most part I'm happy. I looks like some softness in the corners particularly at 16mm.

Also, I'm finding the right corner to be soft even when stopped down at 16mm.

Is that to be expected?

the wall might not be fully parralel to the camera

the softness could simply be OOF depending on where you focused.

50mm @F8

You're right, but it's out of focus about equal amounts in each corner. I'll post some more at 16mm stopped down in a bit.

Here are some at 50mm f8

I think you should find a color map or something flat to test it on, but from your sample shots, they look as bad as my first two samples of the lens I had...

It's a K10D. I'll do a more formal test hopefully tomorrow.

you know, i read in another thread here that alot of the problems people with K10D's have with the 16-50 lenses is simply a matter of lens recognition and some screwing around in the firmware.

do you have the ability to take the camera+lens into a pentax place and have them work some magic?

Typical problems of the 16-50 are backfocussing at 16 mm and decentering issues.
Use a focussing test chart and 16mm at f2.8, min. focus distance.
