The same problem

I'm in the same situation. Event chain as follows:

1. My copy was very bad when I bought it. Returned it to Pentax for service due to focus and sharpening issues. Took 6 weeks and they fixed foucus as they claimed. When returned it was still not sharp as I expected it to be for a 1000$ lens. Further is was nor moving smooth when zooming. It was a sort of stop (didnt slide well) around 28-32 mm.

I took help from my buddy and his frinds (who are a prof. press photographer at a major newspaper) and they thought that the lens sucked when looking at sharpness from 2.8-5.6.

We did some testing and suddenly it stuck and looked itself at 32mm. A ratteling noice was heard inside the lens as of something had come loose.

2. Went back to Pentax once more and they send it away again for service oonce more. Now it's been away for 9 weeks. Now they claim that I've broken it myself!!!

Personally after reading tons of informations about DA* 16-50 it seems that Pentax has a serious quality issue with this lens.

I will speak to Pentax on monday and see what they say. If there is no solution to this it's bye bye Pentax for me. (Buying used Canon gear from my friend).
It's said due to that I like the camera but I can't stand bad service and when companies don't take care of thier bad product quality.

If they don't fix this I think Pentax as a brand will be gone again in some years.

Is it possible to get a mor normally lit shot.
More DA*16-50 centre 100% crops on tripod:

f2.8, 1/1000, ISO100, 16mm

f5.6, 1/200, ISO100, 16mm

Focus did not change between shots, yet 2.8 is blurry whereas 5.6 is sharper.

I don't have this DA* lens myself, and if this is normal I'm certinaly not going to get one either. Talk about unimpressive results wide open.

I think the lens suffers from Spherical Aberration, as a result of bad manufacturing.

in looking at the photos, is it possible that yoiu are having a problem with focusing to infinity?

It certainly looks like it.

I was actually very happy with the quality of the images from the lens, just shocked that it'd suddenly lock up like this. I'm hoping that Pentax doesn't give me a hard time about it, considering the lens is basically 2 months old. Guess we'll see.

Is not sharp even when focused closer than infinity:

I still think its spherical aberration.

I repeated tests with K100D, same result. Lens is faulty.

Grave Problem Here!!!!

That's it.......

You are not suppose to post pictures showing images taken with a "Camera" or a "Lens" for that matter. We are here to talk about "GEAR"

Every time we get in to a cozy discussion about "PIXELS", "AF", "RAW" etc etc...Someone has to F up the works and "SHOW A 'PITCHER'"

Don't you know, and I must thank "RH"for this wise advice,

Don't take "PITCHERS" with your camera!!!! That is BORING!!!

The problem here is this. By showing a "PITCHER" you create insecurity in those who only like reading "SPECS"

It forces a major Paradigm shift that can often cause major depression and possible PSYCHOSIS in those who have come from a less "Centered" and "STABLE...ized" environment.

Your lack of "EMPATHY" here shows your lack of "Sensitivity!"

So please "NO MORE PITCHERS"

You are compelling people to actually use their camera...That is just too much of a commitment for most of us.

Thanks for your understanding.

Dr. Jack M.E. Auff Ph.D.

While I understand and agree to a point with what you are trying to say, why even have a forum dedicated Pentax? Why even post on a forum with a brand name in its address?

That is if I'm interpreting your post correctly, Ben. :S

Don't worry Dr. Jack M.E. Auff Ph.D., I Won't post any PITCHERS on these forums.

However I might post some Pictures on these forums from time to time

When I get home I should take a picture of a PITCHER and post it
