Looks like the perserverence has paid off in returning faulty lens and finally come out with a good copy.

It was well worth it by the looks of it ... this is what this lens should have performed like day one out of the box.

Great Photos.
You have 3 DA* lenses?
Wow you must have the cash...
Heh, not quite. I returned 2 copies of this lens before getting a good one. I own only one.

Very true, there still is no excuse for the lapse in QC with this lens. Had they taken their time with production and QC, Pentax would have hit a grand slam with this lens and won over many, many more customers.

Thank you, Dave. I was determined to get a good copy, because I knew that they existed. Hopefully, Pentax will learn a lesson from all this.

Thank you, Tom. You won't be disappointed, assuming you get a good one. If not, just keep returning until you get a winner. Hopefully, your first will be the last

Thank you, Song. Worth giving it another shot. Just make sure vendor has good return policy.

Yes, great shots all around.

You just renewed my confidence in this lens and would definitely use it again for some trips down the track. The colour, IMHO, is way better than Da 14
Thanks, Roentarre

I own the DA 14 as well and I can verify that your opinion is correct. The DA 14 is a very fine lens, but the contrast and color rendition is not as good as the DA* 16-50.

Thank you, Pat. Yes, indeed, the third time was very charmed! My experience was at times very frustrating, but in the end, it all payed off. Hopefully, Pentax will put priority on QC over production time in the future.

Superb shots Tbear! I can't wait till I get my 16-50 back from the repair!

16-50 really performs well, if you have a good copy!
Thanks, Eagle and Gawan. When built with the proper care, this lens is sure to please.

Wow, those look really great. It's nice to see there are some good copies out there. But I have to admit the negative press has probably scared me off from ever buying this lens. Maybe I'd get one that is pre-tested to be a good copy.

Me too. I struck it off my list of possible lenses. I must buy by mail and cannot afford to return lenses multiple times just to get one that's within spec. I think this is a scandal. Had I known of this before committing to Pentax I might have made a different system choice. Perhaps just as well that I did not!

DA*16-50 Test

I just finished testing my Dads DA*16-50mm on his K20D

From the images below would you think he has a defective copy?

Red circles are reference to the 100% crops
Green dot is where single point AF was aimed at.
Camera was on tripod SR off
2 sec timer delay

The unusual thing is the Pentax DA*16-50 tested slightly worse on my K10D than his K20D.
And the same tests using the Sigma 24-60 F2.8 @ 50mm was better on my K10 than his K20.

So waht do you think.....send it back??

Cheers
