Da 12-24 + da* 16-50

Just picked a 16-50 and like it very much. Doesn't seem to have any problems so far, but I haven't really done any tests. I also have a DA 12-24, and though it has only been a few weeks, I haven't used it very much at all. Only time will tell, but I was wondering if anyone else has both and cares to share their experiences with usage/usability.

I have both and use them for different things.

I don't use my 12-24mm much until I go on holidays. Then it becomes almost my walkaround lens. I love taking shots of resorts, houses, beaches, skys and buildings with it. You just cannot beat the vista of a shot at 12mm that has a partly cloudy sky.

My 16-50mm is more for people photography, for wandering around my home town and for going out in bad weather. If I didn't do people photography, though, I probably wouldn't even own this lens. For wandering around the city and parks, I actually like the 50-135mm best.

I like both lenses a lot but I find they fill different needs for me. If I could only keep one it'd be the 12-24mm.

At one point I had both the DA12-24/4 and DA16-50/2.8 and did some newspaper test and in a different thread I reported that:

"the DA16-50/2.8 is sharper across the frame than the DA12-24/4 when comparing at the same focal length and aperture .... The DA12-24/4 is known for mild distortion and sharpness across the frame and it was a pleasant surprise to see the DA16-50/2.8 doing this well at the wide-end. Although the DA16-50/2.8 does have it's fault, i.e. distortion at 16mm, decrease sharpness at 50mm, it rarely leaves my camera. I really fell in love with the contrasty images and the solid build quality. Needless to say I am very happy with it ..."

I ended up selling the DA12-24/4 couple months ago because I was quite happy with the DA16-50/2.8. The only complain is the more pronounced distortion at 16mm. However, I am now considering getting the DA12-24/4 again as I think it compliments my FA31/1.8 better. Both are great lens and depends on what you have in your kit and what you want to use it for. Hope this helps.

Odd, that is EXACTLY my experience.

I have both, and use both. The 16-50 is my one lens walk around most of the time. On the other hand, I have used the 12-24 for the same thing and really enjoyed it. They are different, but complementary one to the other. If I am in the wide open spaces looking for scenic landscapes, it's the 12-24. If I am in just general shooting mode, I use the 16-50. Love 'em both.
