Pentax Japan has officially announced release date for two new DA* lenses. In Japan DA* 50-135mm F2.8 will be available July 27, 2007. DA* 16-50mm F2.8 two weeks later - August 11, 2007.

In the United States (and most other countries) both lenses will available simultaneously on August 15, 2007.

Pentax* 16-50 f 2.8 Lens

My Pentax 16-50 lens just arrived. In fact I thought I would write this even before taking it out of the box. Now if that isn't instant reporting, I don't know what. Once I learn how to mount in onto my camera, I'll get back to you with my impressions. Shit..that means a new UV filter...

Ben

One Hour in to it UPDATE:

PS...Just posted six images in the Gallery all shot at 50mm from f2.8 to f16.0. Go to Misc. Photos to view the test.
Focused on "ERKAL"
https://www.pentaxforums.com/gallery/category-15-miscellaneous-photos.html

Unfortunately for this forum had to have the JPEG reduced size by 30% in compressions of 7 to 9 out of 12 is PS.

Ben

I'm looking forward to your impressions. One question right off the bat, though:

why do you use a UV filter with your lens? I've heard/read that the CCD sensor coatings eliminate any contaminating UV light and a lens hood is far more useful for protecting a lens' front element.

Not necessarily more useful, just different. Me, I'm taking pictures around very active young kids and I'll take all the protection I can get. I imagine it's somewhat similar to all the professional models Ben works with.

I use a relatively nice multicoated filter and have never noticed any image degradation, even though obviously every extra bit of glass makes a theoretical difference.

But really, let's not start that argument again -- you can find plenty of it in the archives of this forum or on thousands of other web sites. Instead, I'm eager to hear what Ben thinks about the new lens.

I love my DA* 16-50 and it's the perfect focal length for everything I shoot and is stellar for model portraits.

Examples:

Ben, you'll love the lens and it'll end up on the K10D more often then you'd really hope. I haven't taken mine off is a long while and it almost stops me from using the FA 50mm 1.4!

Ben and Chris,
Thanks for posting the photos. I was wondering if you both could share your opinions of the lens at 2.8. I know all lens are softest wide-open. How does the 16-50 compare with say the 50-135 at 50mm f2.8 and to other zooms you have used in the 16-50 range at 2.8? Many thanks.
PS Ben, I saw your photos; the 2.8 is noticiably softer. But I cannot compare that with another lens at the same aperature. Any thoughts on how this lens compares at 2.8?
