Hi, Yipchunyu!

Again, a very interesting piece of info you brought us, thank you! The official photo from Pentax home page shows atm the same marking "SMC": http://www.pentax.jp/english/news/2008/press-image/200818-02b.jpg
I don't know if they consider ABC a more advanced coating of a specialised one for some specific lenses or even better the future standard SMC coating but I am pretty sure that SMC evolved a lot from its first formula and this is just the lattest.

Anyway I noticed the date 12th of December and the promise the blogger made for further pictures and I think they are here: Translated version of http://ivyjopy.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!9C2325683F4C3B9C!7907.entry
They all seem to be made @f1.4 (as marked on the pics) even though the exif is not there.
IF they are @f1.4 I must say I am impressed!

Regards,
Radu

Quote from the official page: Two new smc PENTAX-DA* (DA Star) lenses - High-performance, top-quality telephoto zoom and medium-telephoto models designed exclusively for PENTAX digital SLR cameras

"A newly developed Aero Bright Coating enhances image-description performance by effectively reducing reflections over a wider wavelength range. Compared to conventional multi-coatings, this new coating greatly improves light transmittance in the lens, while drastically reducing flare and ghost images that deteriorate image quality."

Thanks!
Very interesting.
"wider wavelength range"
For IR one has a filter on the sensor.
How problematic are reflections in the UV range?

Does the inclusion of the AF/MF switch on the lens barrel mean that the lens doesn't have the Quick Shift Focusing?

No, all the DA*s have the switch and all have quick shift.

Pentax has made several improvements to their SMC coating through the years. With each improvement they retain the SMC label. In other words, ABC is simply the latest version of SMC. They will continue to label the lenses as SMC.

From what I was told (and looking at its size far bigger than FA50) I would say: YES, it does!
