Converter for A* 300mm f4?

Hi Folks!

Anyone care to suggest a teleconverter for the Pentax A* 300mm f4?

Thanks!
Dave

P.S. I tried the Pentax 2X-L but the extension collides with the rear lens element.

The 2X-s would probably work. They show up on ebay once in a while. Not sure about the Sigma EX APO, I hear those are kind of finnicky.

The Kenko PZ-AF AF 1.5X SHQ adapter has no extensions or protrousions to interfere with anything. It works with Autofocus lenses as well as with K & M lenses.

I have the A* 300mm and a 1.4X-S rear converter and have used it for taking pics of surfers here. I use the focus trap method and it works pretty well, but in lower light it will struggle more to achieve focus. IQ is pretty good with this combo and pics can be cropped.

I had the 2X-S and used it with the A* 300mm and found it didn't work as well, focussing was a little harder and IQ wasn't better than cropping the pic using the 1.4X-S.

You need a smc f1.7x afa, you will be at 510mm f6.7 and it will autofocus (after rough manual focus).

I have the K3000F4 and use it with the 1.7x AF TC. Images are excellent, and as borno commented you get AF after a rough manual focus.

You could also check the sigma 1.4x TC for interference. It might not be a problem depending on the rear design f the A300. I know it does work with some pentax long tele's but forget which ones.

Thanks! I was actually able to pick one up yesterday, and in very early testing, it seems to work very well with the A*.

Thanks again to all!

I have to agree. While I think by itself the A* 300mm lens is pretty good, I like it even better combined with the F-1.7x. They seem to compliment one another very well, and the converter helps with my single biggest complaint with the A* 300 - the 4m minimum focus distance. With the combination, you basically get a lightweight ~500mm f/6.7 lens, capable of focusing down to around 3.2m, which is not much bigger than a FA* or DA* 200mm lens (though obviously much slower).
