I did a Google search to help you out, but came up empty. Sorry. Maybe the site closed already?

Here is a discussion about the serial number ranges for the older lenses but no links to a site that sill allow for lens/serial number look up.

Lens Serial Numbers Revisited - Photo.net Medium Format Forum

Just curious as to why you are looking for this information?

I want to buy an Super Takumar m 50mm 1.4 off ebay ; I understand there are different versions of this lens, by comparing the serial # to others that are posted on the site I'll know which version it is.

I believe it was called the 'M42 Pentax Screwmount online database project' and was located at this web address http://www.m-fortytwo.info
but it's no longer there

I see. Here is an excerpt from the 5th post down on the link i gave:

The change from "Super Takumar" to "Super-Multi-Coated Takumar" took place somewhere between serial numbers starting 46 (Super) and 56 (S-M-C). The change between "Super-Multi-Coated Takumar" and "smc Pentax" took place somewhere between 8257xxx (S-M-C Tak) and 8275172 (smc Pentax).

Want more? In the "smc Pentax" lenses, the styling change from the 35mm K/M series-type focus rings to the 35mm A series-type focus rings took place somewhere between 8512666 and 8516652.

There is more info on the page as well but I have not gone through the whole thing.

EDIT I have just gone through the whole thing and it looks like this refers to Medium Format lenses. Sorry about that.

this site shows the 4 versions of the lens. Die Cast Pro - Pentax Lenses
I am trying to distinguish which version the ebay lens is by comparing serial #'s on the lost web database.
EDIT: here is a pic of the lens, can anybody tell which version it is? Looks to me like Super tak later version. a good one?

The site you reference shows only TWO versions of the lens. It is a Super Takumar 1:1.4/50mm. The only way to tell is by part # or visual inspection as far as I know. The part # for the early version is 358, and for the late version is 378, 37800, 37801, or 37802. My reference is here: View all Takumar lens types. Based on the years they were produced (1964 for the early and 1965 forward for the late), the odds favor it being the late version. Ask the seller to give you the part # if you want to be sure.
