Information about S-M-C 2.8/120

By a lucky chance I got this lens and people elsewhere have been saying it is very rare. But what does it mean? 100? 1000? 10000?

Must I build a humidor or something and stop carrying it with me on seashore or sawmills where I do most of my photography?

it may be similar to my 105mm F2.8
This focal lenght may not have been made since the onset of the K mount in 1976

That is all. Pentax has never released production figures on any of its lenses

The lens seems to be somewhat hard to find at least in part because it wasn't built for all that long. For whatever reason the 105 f2.8 and 135 f2.5 both seem to have been more popular and sold in larger nembers.

I know of a small camera shop with a 120 f2.8 in good condition for sale but I haven't worked out a price for it with the owner yet, largely because the shop tries to price in the ballpark of current market value and we haven't been able to find much in the way of recent transactions.

The few sample photos I've found online seem to be similar quality to the images produced by the 105 f2.8 but I haven't come across enough high quality images to know how accurate that impression is. I wouldn't mind hearing your opinion of the lens if you are willing to take the time to post some photos.

I don't know how much the comparitive rarity versus other similar lenses would increase value but from a practical viewpoint you could find a replacement for the lens if you wanted to get one, it just might take a while.

Edit: To clarify, you have the m42 version and not the K version, right?

Yes, the m42 version.

Here are samples on mflenses:

I'm more interested in the history of the lens instead of value (money or quality).
Haven't been able to find almost nothing - thought here could be the experts ..

bought mine off of craigslist for $120 and have not seen one since or even before it popped up there. It is a good lens and is one of the reasons i have not bought the 135 takumar yet.

Alright, I actually saw your post on mflenses.com when I was looking for samples.

I've seen a few online databases with production dates for various Takumar lenses but I have no idea how accurate they might be. This link: Tak Tele 1 claims production from 1973 to 1976 but that doesn't really narrow down when a particular lens was built or sold.

Gokenin, out of curiosity do you prefer your 105mm or your 120mm Takumar?

I'd say - in our marketplace at current market conditions: $75 for an ugly copy with clean optics, $175 for a mint copy with case, caps, etc.

Something in between ugly and mint - yeah, around $120.

EDIT: Sale Example here.

EDIT EDIT: OK, that's an M, not a Tak....

They are both good lens but I like the look that I get with the 105 a little better. I can try and do some side by side pics if I can remember to.

A lead sealed laser alarmed panic room should do nicely

I have the M42 Super Multi Coated, picked it up at a flea market for next to nothing, i love it my favorite Tak

I have watched the big bid site they hardly ever come up for sale.
