2 things...........

First up, the Pentax Canada website doesn't even LIST the 1.7.
Is it an older lens? Or maybe just not available up here?

Second....... I have an SMC-A 50mm f1.7 and have been toying with buying the FA 50/1.4.........will I only be gaining auto-focus??? Or is the FA series generally better than the A series?
Yes, the FA 50 1.7 was discontinued in 2004, which is another reason why it should be snapped up when found, especially at $130.

The FA 1.7 is the same optical design as the A 1.7, and gives you AF, a little extra weight, and that's pretty much it, unless the coatings are better on the FA, which I've never heard said. But AF is a big deal, doubles the resale value of the lens.

I had both FAs at one point and the 1.7 was the harder of the two to let go. Sure, it's not as fast as the 1.4 but you know the 1.7 will give you pretty predictable results at any apertures, even wide open. And at $130 what's the worse it can happen? You can easily sell it here at that price if you don't like it.

Good choice...

Some how I ended up with both. For 130 bucks the FA 1.7 is a great choice IMO.

if you dont need the extra light or shallowr dof , go for the f1.7 . Personally I would buy the 1.4 over the 1.7 any day of the week .

I went to pick up the used 1.7 and after inspection i passed on it. I'm a newbie, have no idea what a good used lens looks like- the dust i observed inside scared me off-at least a couple dozen visable specks ( with flashlight shined in one end, viewed from the other) The barrel was spotless. The two shots i took seemed soft after reviewing when i got home so I think i made a good decision ( dust was not noticed) If anybody is interested it's listed on craigslist in Toronto. It's listed as $150 but owner was willing to accept $135, with B&W filter.
Pentax K10D DSLR, FA 43 f1.9 Limited, FA 50 f1.7
EDIT: I should add that the owner gave me a bad feeling, 'shifty' , played a part in my decision.

Test shot with my new 50mm f1.4

Merely a test shot. Was the first one that I took. Got home, took it out of the box, shoved it on the K10D and went click! I can't get over the sharpness and the IQ, as this is the first prime I have ever owned.

That's quite a cute looking shot Darius but it really is hard to tell because it is such a small image.
Eyes look sharp (see above), I like the use of DOF. It's a bit overexposed on the right and compositionally it would be better IMO if the dog was less centered and you had taken the shot from a little lower to get a different perspective.

Pop Photo's High Praise For FA 50mm F 1.4 Prime

Hey All,
I was going to post this in the lens topic area but thought it was more suited here so everyone could see. Pop Photo's February 2009 issue has an article about prime lenses and it appears they love the Pentax version most of all. I never realized how versatile this lens was (even after I bought one) The article also brings out how this lens does more than what it did during the old days of film. Great article, check it out.

Nice article but I was referring POP Photo's latest issue which has an entire article dedicated to various companies prime lenses, Pentax not only excelled over the competition, it was also the cheapest er least expensive (hate that word "cheap" sometimes) Don't know if it's online yet,was referring to the magazine edition

My visit to the Popular Photography web site reveals January is still up--unfortunately. I look forward to the read on the Pentax primes. Positive exposure like this is good for Pentax!

Broken smc pentax-m 1.4 50mm

Hey guys. I just got a free 50mm 1.4 smc pentax-m lens from a friend of mine. He is actually an eBay dealer. It is in quite rough condition. The glass on it is beautiful, but appears to have been dropped or hit with a hammer or something cruel because the front casing on it is broken off on one side. You can tell in the picture that the filter ring is all mashed up. That also keeps the front lens on and right now it is rotating in place because it is loose. Does anyone have an exploded diagram for one of these lenses? Anybody know of a place that might sell that replacement front casing? Thanks in advance. By the way the lens takes awesome pictures. Can't wait to give it a real world test.
