holy resurrected threads

hmm, i am inclined to believe the difference between kit lens and DA 16-45, as your comparison was similiar to one i made too.

i also did once own both the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 and did some side by side comparisons to my DA 16-45 f/4. Of course, if you are shooting in low light and need f/2.8, there is simply no contest, BUT comparing sharpness and overall IQ, it was easy for me to keep my DA16-45 and sell the Sigma. The Sigma just couldn't match the Pentax at f/4 and especially when stopped down a few clicks.

I was thinking the 45mm may not quite be long enough and thought i needed that extra 5mm, but then i discovered from my head to head comparisons that the images i shot at 50mm on the Sigma were all wider than those show at 45mm with the Pentax. I don't know the explanation for this, but concluded I was not in fact giving up any focal length on the long end of the zoom vs the Sigma.

And then, i did the same comparison using a Vivitar 24mm/2.8 vs the Pentax at 24mm, and was quickly reminded why so many people prefer inexpensive old primes to zooms. The Viv killed it on IQ and corner sharpness. Of course, for quick aim and shoot events where i want to use auto focus and metering, you bet the DA 16-45 is in my bag.
...and did I mention i only paid $100 for my DA 16-45?

However, in the shots where the 16-45 is sharper, it is sharper from the foreground all the way to infinity. Basically, there is no part of the image where the 18-55 appears to be sharper or more in focus.
Oh, I don't think anyone would expect it to win - just for the difference to not be so clearly visible at the posted size. I think it pretty clear there is an issue with the second shot; whether due to focus, blur, manufacturing defect in your copy, smudge on the lens, a cheap filter, or something else is hard to say. But the lens is clearly capable of far better.

roentarre I would definitely vouch for tamron here. A lens well worth the price.

James. I agree with you--%100. I have a lot of empathy for the OP here since I remember being in this decision-making mode a long while back. Countless hours, sifting through voluminous writings & comparisons on all of these nice lenses (though I also threw the Da 16-50mm into the mix). Like all of these perennial "which is better threads," there really is no right answer--it really boils down to what is right for the individual buyer. For me, that meant the Tamron since its warranty is unrivaled, it is a constant 2.8, it close focuses, has excellent distortion #s, and defines sharpness. Not to mention it performs splendidly wide open. I thought I missed out on the weather sealing when I bought the Tamron. However, as it turns out, even in the worst weather of my year round hiking, it performed flawlessly, making me realize I had a false, perceived need for the weather sealing in the first place.
