Definitely not birds.
Tokina 400/5.6 on the LX. Hand-held long before SR in the polar nigth, Arctic Ocean, around 85 degrees North if I remember correctly. Only light source is some headlamps. Fujichrome 400 ISO. Scanned on a crappy flat bed scanner, will do it better on the film scanner some day.

Hard to see it, right? Hope you didn't forget to bring your gun?

"I think I can smell some fresh scientists..."

"Mmh, either the seals learned to walk on their back flippers, or this is the foot prints of some two-three very crispy scientists...realy fat and tasty."

"Oh damn, I lost them, they must be hiding in that strange large human-thing with all the lights over there (translate to ice breaker)."

I use F/FA 300mm lens mainly for birds and wild lives, but I quite like to use it for some people shots too:

Admittedly I find most of my long shots are of birds but the other 2/3rd's of them have a variety fo subjects from frozen rivers to four legged critters. All photos from Tokina 80-400 at 400mm.

Borno, that last two shots are just wow. I wish I was there to see the scene in person.... but wait, this is telephoto lens isn't it? so you can only see it through the viewfinder.

Found some old shots I had forgotten about.

All taken with long lens' from 500-1000mm.

The most extreme shot is of the rabbit taken with 1000mm FL lens at prime focus barlowed to an effective FL of 2000mm (60x). Full frame at about 120 feet I think.
