Best landscape wide angle lens?

What is the best landscape wide angle pentax lens ever made?

Pentax is an outdoor brand and they are proud of present
cameras that are wheather-proof and good image quality,
but what lenses do we have on the outdoor side, that are
wheather-protected as well and good quality that can
match the high pixel resolution of the pentax k20d?

The 12-24 is a favorite but I'm personally waiting and hoping for a DA* 11-16/2.8

Take a look at the Sigma 10-20 too.

Hi!

Thank you so much for your opinion. Does the 12-24 have an very good quality
sharp ect ect? Does it have a rain-proof coat or do I need to shot with a plastic bag?

Well..wow. I will wait for the da 11-16 I think that's the right way to go for pentax. No outdoor brand without outdoor lenses

Thanks once again!

Unfortunately the 12-24 isn't weathersealed. However I've shot in the rain with my old 10-20 and it handled it fine.

If it's just light rain, the 12-24 and 10-20 will handle it fine. They're very well made. If it's strong rain, you'll want a plastic bag or some cover, even if your lens is sealed, to prevent droplets on your lens glass that ruins shots

Thank you so much for the answer

Well, but what great lenses can we find that are rain-proofs? the 16-50da* is maybe good but many people have critic it for the quality and well...16 wide angle is not the same as 11 I like a very wide angle.

What do you guys use?

Unfortunately, there isn't any real rain-proof ultra wide lens there yet. The 16-50 was great but isn't as wide as 11.

I was using the 10-20 in all sorts of weather and it handled like a champ. Let's wait for others to reply.

Yeah well but do you belive the 16-50 is a good choice anyway?

I guess we have to wait...but it's just strange that pentax the outdoor brand
don't have a rain-proof wide angle lens...

and the old ones? do we not have an old FA* wide angle-anything??

SMCP 45/4 for the 6x7.
You didn't specify format.

Well that works well for me I would enjoy use the 6X7 lenses, so that's great. Thank you!

Why is this lens so good? is it sharp and good colors?

Thanks again

You need to realize that the 6x7 lenses are designed for that format and a 45mm is a wide angle lens on those cameras. They can be adapted to 35mm format cameras (LX, K20D etc) but the adapter is expensive and tough to find. The lens becomes a normal FOV lens on 35mm and totally manual. Plus it's not weathersealed.

There is a feature of the site that reviews all the lenses available. The 45mm is here:
Pentax Lens Review Database - 45mm F4

and all the various series are here:

Pentax Lens Review Database - Main Index

The widest weathersealed (WS) lens for 35mm is the DA*16-50mm. This WS feature is very new to Pentax and other brands generally. So there are only a few lenses made this way so far. More will come over time but I don't expect there is a big demand for a 10mm WS lens. It makes more sense for the wildlife shooter 'hunting' for the great bird/animal shot in poor weather conditions with a longer lens. But 16mm has a FOV of 24mm and that is pretty wide. Beyond that you have distortion issues with many lenses.

As Peter said, the weathersealed lenses are pretty new so I'm sure an ultrawide weathersealed lens will come soon. I loved the 16-50. I sold it for the DA Limiteds but I miss it. I plan to buy another one for my outdoor adventures.

Hi! i'm new!
This is my first time in this forum.
I'm a happy owner of a k20d, and in these days i'm thinking on buying a super wide-angle lens.
I'm thinking on Sigma 10-20, but I need your help.
Does anybody know if this lens for pentax DSRL has the HSM or not?

Thanks guys!

I have the Sigma 10-20 and I like it very much. Never been disappointed either.
Of course, I don't use it as much as I should but it is definitely a great little lens.
It doesn't have USM but ... Big Deal! The AF works fine and it is fast enough for most, if not all, extra-wide shots.
Plenty luminous and very sharp.

I'm another member of Sigma 10-20 club. As for HSM/USM whateverSM, it doesn't bother me too much. I usually (95% of shots) use it on 10mm f5.6 MF on 1m mark. Results: didn't have many bad shots. It's really sharp and it's FOV is great. Plus it's CA and PF are very well controled.
