For what it is worth I am about to send my 16-50mm in for the same problem. Optically it is great, and I have made quite a bit of money with it, but the SDM seems to be causing a lot of problems.

I guess I'll go with Tamron, or a comparable Sigma.

aside from what ever "failures" have been reported, you need to consider what you shoot.

both a 50-135 (or 150 with the sigma) or a 70-200 will work well.

You trade off length for weight reduction.

it also depends on the rest of your lenses, if you have a 16-50, the 50-135 fits well, if you have a 20 somethin gto 70/75 the 70-200 miught be better
