I'd rather have a few amazing lenses than a bunch of good ones. I can often change FOV with my feet. I can't change the sharpness and look that way. Another option is to get a 43ltd and just get in a little closer. That said, the 77 is still my favorite Pentax lens.

A couple of alternatives worth mentioning, in the AF format:

Tamron 90mm macro - pretty damn good for non-macro work as well. Though I have the Adaptall mf 52BB, this lens has managed to keep me from a Pentax 85.

Pentax 70 limited - different feel I know to the 77, but a good lens in its own right

New, neither would fit your budget, but used, maybe.

Going down that route, you could also add the Sigma 70mm f/2.8 macro.

But I would suggest saving up to get the 77 Ltd if that's what you want. You can get a used one in good condition for $500-550 if you're patient.
