Where can original retail lens prices be found?

.

I saw a post either here or on dpreview recently that showed the original MSRP of several Pentax lenses, including $900 something for the M 20 f/4 back in the 70's.

It's driven me crazy trying to find that post, but regular expression searches are not getting me anywhere...

Does anyone know of a site that has any original MSRP's of the M-series, or K's, or Taks? I mean, what they originally cost retail when they sold new - any ads, catalogs, anything with prices? Seems like that info should have been easy to preserve and link....

Jay: Inquire in the Pentax Forum of Photo.net for a member who has a Pentax Dealer Catalog and price list from the period. I have had the same conversation but I cannot remember the member name.

Have a look at this https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-film-slr-discussion/47145-catalog-late-60s.html

Plus the member on PN is Lindy Stone. You can find his email link on that site.

I've got a book with early 80's prices.. but they would be $AUD which may not translate very well!

Are there any M's in there, or are they all A's?

Lindy Stone from photo.net was nice enough to look up the MSRP of the M 20 f/4
in his 1978 Pentax Dealer Catalog for me - in 1978 dollars, $497.78 list, $298.67
wholesale to dealer.

So, in 2007 dollars, that's $1566 initial MSRP retail, and $937 wholesale to dealer.

That's not a cheapie!

Nice to know about Lindy, thanks again folks.

M20/4.0

So, did you bid on that one recently showing on an auction site?

No, I recently found my original copy that I thought was stolen from my bag, but
before I found it I was looking to buy another one, and was shocked to see them starting at around $300. What auction, I'd like to watch what happens...

Yeah, I think I actually did see those, and I bid on the A 20 2.8 but let it go.

$212 is much better than KEH & Adorama's $300+ - I bought mine for $170 shipped, and would spend $212 again in a heartbeat for another. Luckily, I don't have to try to snipe one any more!

Interesting info from Lindy:

Thanks! Lindy, does your catalog list the M 85 f2 and M 100 f/2.8?

-Jay

Lindy Stone [Frequent poster] , Jan 21, 2009; 08:54 p.m.

Indeed they are in same price sheets from Dec 1978:

85mm f2 w/ hood: List 386.55 Wholesale 231.93

100mm f2.8 w/hood: List 266.58 wholsale 159.95

A couple interesting facts I'd add is at this point December 1978, some 2 years after K Mount was introduced only 5 screw mount lenses were still available: 28mm/3.5, 35mm/3.5, 135mm/3.5, 200mm/f4 & 50mm/f4 macro. And there were 13 different 6x7 lenses available ranging from $468 to $4267 msrp retail.

You're welcome Jay, Lindy

So that puts the M 85 f/2 at $1214 MSRP and M 100 2.8 at $836 in 2007 dollars.

This makes me feel like the MSRP of $1400 or whatever for the DA* 60-250 isn't completely outrageous.

Any folks here who were buying lenses back in 1978 remember your thoughts on the retail prices? Did they seem high to you then?

(It's also interesting that there were Taks still being sold retail then, didn't know that.)
