travel with a forklift?!?

Good on ya, but I find the 50-135* to be on the edge of what I like to carry.

You gotta love the diversity of philosophies on this forum. In an earlier thread, I'd suggested my ideal travel kit was my K20 and 2 pancake lenses.

I also subscribe to the "small is good" philosophy when travelling with my gear. I will say that although Jack's travel kit may not be small, it is simple and high quality.

Last spring, my dad bought his first DSLR, a Canon XSi and of course, the lenses started adding up, his heaviest being a L-series 300/4IS, which is not a small lens by any means. I'm not sure where in the process this happened, but Mom did make it crystal clear that she would NOT be a pack-mule for his gear. Moral of the story: Unless the the spouse offers to carry your gear for you, then don't assume that they're willing to carry it. Keep this in mind when you're choosing lenses to buy.

BTW, don't forget to pack the tripod--you're going to need it!

Wow. U have a powerhouse here!

But would this combination not be too heavy for a travel setup?

This is the case I take with me in the car everywhere. Has my K20d, Pentax 50-135, Tamron 17-50 on the camera, Sigma 150-500, Battery Grip, Binoculers, Tamron 1.4 TC. Wired Remote, and wireless, cleaning gear,

My Manual Gear is in this case, my K1000 and various Lenses.

Both cases will fit on this and it folds down real neat and small.

I have a bag for my 2 Tripods and my Monopod.

Ahh, you've seen me

Actually, I rarely carry an extra lens. Just what is on the camera, which for the last month has mostly been 43ltd.

We all have different parameters for "travel"

I would have to wonder about the overall effectiveness of the kit. Although mine is probably similar

Sigma APO 10-20mm F4/-5.6 EX DC
Pentax FA-J 18-35mm F4-5.6
Tamron XR Di 28-75mm F2.8
Sigma APO 70-200 F2.8 EX
Plus Sigma APO 1.4 EX and Sigm,a APO 2x EX DG teleconverters.

the difference is you have 500mm not 400, although you are 1/2 stop slower at maximum focal length, and the 70-200 gives F2.8 a little further out than the 50-135 in your kit.

The other advantage is I have F4 between 200and 300 mm,

It is easier, I think to walk around with a few more smaller items.

I am also thinking hard case, plus a small shoulder bag,

I have in the past taken a small shoulder bag to hold two small lenses, while the third is on my camera, or to carry a second body with different lens, leaving the rest in the hotel. Hard case can be locked, and tied to an immovable object usig a laptop security strap.
