I also subscribe to the "small is good" philosophy when travelling with my gear. I will say that although Jack's travel kit may not be small, it is simple and high quality.
Last spring, my dad bought his first DSLR, a Canon XSi and of course, the lenses started adding up, his heaviest being a L-series 300/4IS, which is not a small lens by any means. I'm not sure where in the process this happened, but Mom did make it crystal clear that she would NOT be a pack-mule for his gear.
Moral of the story: Unless the the spouse offers to carry your gear for you, then don't assume that they're willing to carry it. Keep this in mind when you're choosing lenses to buy.
BTW, don't forget to pack the tripod--you're going to need it!
