SMC FA 50 f1.4 vs SMC A 50 f1.4?

Has anyone done or seen a comparison of these 2 lenses? The reason I ask is that the price of the FA lens seems to have dropped, they are on amazon for $200 shipped. I have also noticed that used ones in good condition are going for ~$130 to $150. I have been shopping for an SMC A version, but the asking prices are $100 to $125.

Does the "A" outperform the "FA" version? The FA version has gotten very good reviews ......

I don't think that you will notice any difference optically between the A and the FA.
I would take the FA to get AF.

I have the FA50/1.4 and the A50/1.7 and I use both. A50 when I feel like focusing manually, because focusing the FA50 manually is not so pleasant.

Owned both the A and FA 50mm f/1.4. Optically identical though I feel the lens coating on the A is just slightly yellower, perhaps due to age or slight changes in the lens coating.

Like blende8, I'd take the FA version for the benefit of AF.

Tech specs

Just in case you want to check the specs of the two,

B Dimitrov's link showing prime lens specs:

and the reviews by Pentax forum users:

Pentax Lens Review Database - FA Series Primes

I have used M 50mm f1.4. It was excellent. If you love manual focus then go for A 50mm. Soon I will have a F 50 f1.7 for AF. AF helps me in event photography where adults and kids are always moving.

The new lens price will go up from February I believe. So if you are planning to buy a new FA50, this is the time. The used lens price may go up as well because of this price rise
