Lens focus binding--why?

Not sure if this is the right place to post . . . But, I have a SMC Pentax-M 50mm F1.7 lens that has been basically married to my MX body for many years.

Anyhow, it is very clean and operates smoothly. However, for some reason, it won't focus any further out than 1.2M. There are no kinks or scuffs that show up on the barrel and it looks "clear" through and I haven't tried to force it. What would be causing the focus to bind up?

These are the problems you encounter when you loan your camera to a teenager in high school Photography class Perhaps it was bad luck?
