FA 50mm 1.4...which hood???

Hi folks,

What lens hood are most of you all using with your FA 50/1.4? I know you can get the stock square clip on model, but is there another option.

Also, I have read a few posts on the boards regarding "fast" full-frame lenses and their use on cropped digital sensors. These post suggest using a longer than normal hood to better shield the lense from stray light and help increase sharpness. I thought the approximate theory of increased hood length was 1.5x (same as sensor crop factor), but nothing was ever officially stated.

Anyway, what hoods are you using and getting successfully sharp images at BELLOW apertures of 2.0.

Thanks!

I'm actually still using the standard hood. If I can find the lens dimensions someday I plan to do the math using DOFMaster to calculate the distance from the sensor plane to the hood edge at the diminished FoV angle.

I use a collapsible rubber hood. Seems to do the trick for me, I have noticed a pleasing increase in contrast with informal experimenting. Sharpness doesn't seem to be affected though.

I don't have 50/1.4 but for my 50/1.7 I'm using hood from my Sigma 105 via step up rings. Works nicely...

I am using the Heliopan Tele lens hood.
It is a 3 cm tube made of aluminium.
Very tight, it does not work on full frame.
Recommended!

I use the rectangular hood on mine. I am not sure if it is "narrow enough" for the cropped sensor, although it appears to help.

Important to note that the use of hoods does not increase sharpness -- rather, it helps to retain contrast that would be lost from off-axis light making the dark spots lighter.

At least, this is my understanding from using telescopes and such over the years.

I will do some testing of my own when I have more time next week.

I use a collapsable rubber hood. It works great, was cheap, and I can just fold it back when in storage, and pull it out when I need it (don't ever have to take it off the lens).

ebay is full of them - just run the search... for example search for a 3-way collapsible lens hood or 3in1 collapsible lens hood

I use a collapsible one from here on my Takumar 50. I was skeptical of it at first, but really do like how it collapses and the protection it gives.

I've got this big old hard plastic one that I've been using now to pretty good satisfaction. I don't know exactly where it comes from, but the type of plastic seems to be fairly old. (It's actually a 52mm I attached with a step ring: it's deep, but broad enough that you actually don't get any vignetting with 35mm, which is a pretty nice combination for me, though it's obviously not as tight as it might be, coverage-wise. Also looks pretty cool, I think. )

Including the step ring, it's about 1 5/8" deep and 3 1/8" across. (That's about 4cm x8 by my floppy measuring tape. )

Nice, those hoods do look really good. I got a folding rubber hood for my FA50 at a local shop for @ $5. It folds down small enough to just stay on the lens and the cap still attaches easily. I always use hoods and the rubber ones are very functional and convenient, but low on the cool factor.
