The type of compromise I was actually alluding in this case to was the specific one surrounding price sensitivity. I'm naturally not an expert in this particular field, but imagine that throwing larger sums of R&D money at the problem and including superior quality optics might potentially lead to even greater improvements in reducing barrel & pincushion distortion. However, there are clearly pitfalls involved for lens manufacturers, should such improvements lead to a subsequent doubling or even tripling of the eventual retail price. At which point no doubt the typical naysayers of this world would be out in force, whining about the fact that they now can't afford such luxuries !
