Dumb 100mm macro question!

I had a chance to try out the D FA 100mm macro last week, but what does the 1/x on the distance scale 'thingy' mean? (As you can tell, I'm not up on all the technical terms yet!)

It means that at its minimum focusing distance (MFD), your lens provides a life size magnification of 1:1 of the subject. In simpler terms, the size of the subject in real life will be exactly the same as the size of its image produced on the sensor through the lens at its MFD. This is usually preferred in a macro lens as such a magnification allows good close-up work.

All the best with your new equipment.

Cheers,
Aditya

Wow, that's actually a really good explanation! It makes perfect sense now. I understood what the 1:1 ratio meant before, but now I understand how to achieve it with this lens. Thanks so much!
