i had something similar happen.
my zoom would get stuck at 19mm and not all the way to 16.
and if you shook the lens, something was loose. this happened, 7 months after purchase, i went back to Calumet, and told them, the took care of it for me..(sending it out pentax, and dealing w/ it...) i got it back, about a month later....works fine now..

I'm in the market for the 16-50, but these failing SDM threads (and there are quite a few of them) are starting to scare me. It seems to happen more often with the 50-135. I don't know if it was from the early production runs and was fixed in subsequent runs or if there is a real problem with Pentax SDM.

my 50-135 has been perfect since day 1. got it a month or 2 after release...the 16-50 is a workhorse, so it's been used more than the 50-135...but aside from that one issue, and it was still under warranty, it has been good...

I have never had problems with my 50-135 and i've had it longer than the 16-50, its also been in the rain just as much.

My 50-135 has also been perfect from Day 1. I expect the 16-50 to get a lot of use (mostly for events) so I'm a little leery because of the SDM issues I've been seeing lately. Hopefully, Pentax found a remedy and it's not the newer SDM models that are having these problems.

Got it back today so it was gone about 13-14 days,
Replaced zoom barrel, rollers and guides, one year warranty renewed.

the zoom ring is a little tighter now, but thats good, better than loose... so now only time will tell if it will lock up on me again. Pentax's turnaround time was pretty good.

How much was the cost on that? Just wondering, looks like my SDM died last night, and I don't have a non-SDM body to try out screw drive focusing on.

Twice in the past three weeks, my DA* 16-50 would not zoom. I tried to turn the barrel but it is jammed. I removed the lens tapped it on its end lightly and then it worked just fine.

A few days ago it refused to auto focus. After some use it freed up and works again.

Obviously I need to send for repair, but has anyone else had these sorts of issues?

Rather depressing, dunno whether I should just buy new, or wait eight weeks for repair. (May cost as much anyway... ergh!)
That happened to my own DA 16-50 within three months after buying. It was blocked completely and also gave up on AF. I got it repaired under warranty, but saw the estimate: 260 Euros - if I'ld payed for myself. Not a cheap repair, but definietely cheaper, than any new lens.
