Pentax FA 50 mm/1.4

I know this isn't technically a DSLR lens, but it was my understanding that I could use this lens on my K20D. But darned if I can figure out how to use it. I've set the camera on Manual and set the fstop based on the distance, but I just get a flashing F-- when I look through the viewfinder. Can anyone help, please. No, I'm not a newbie, but I sure am an amateur at using anything other than specifically DSLR equipment. I've looked through my K20D manual and can nothing that's helpful.

Any help is appreciated

You get the flashing F-- if the lens is in Manual, switch it to Auto and you should be fine.
BTW, can you clarify what lens, I'm assuming you are talking about FA50 f1.4 not FA500.

I just caught the error--yes it should be Fa50 1.4.

I will try switching it to auto. Thank you so much.

OK. I set the focus button to AF-S, but it's still flashing the F--. Where should the top button on the left be set?

On the lens there is a button below and to the left of the P in Pentax press that and rotate the rear ring of the lens until the A ( this is the aperture ring, it's on the same level as the button) is immediately below the T in Pentax. Now it is in Auto and the flashing F-- should disappear. It's easy to press the button and move the aperture ring when mounting the lens.

A partial answer is in the manual page75 with more detail on page 251. Your FA lens has an aperture ring so it can be used when the lens is on other than A. Change Rec Mode menu setting (p72) item no 36 to position 2 to allow use of lenses with aperture rings.

You do not have to be in M mode to use this lens. Av and other modes will work as well (but as if in Av). you will get the F--- signal but ignore it and fire away.

Now can I borrow the lens and see if I can get it to work on my K20D? :-)

I just found the Auto setting on the lens! Thank you twenty million times.

RJB--thank you also. Now if I can just find my manual (I use the Magic Lantern manual as I find it much more understandable and useful.)

The lens should be FA 50 f1.4.

If you have set the aperture to f8 for example, it will not be shown in the viewfinder cos you have manually set it so. Its the shutter speed that will be displayed in the top panel, for M mode.

Turn the focus mode to MF from AF-S, AF-C just beneath the raw button.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
I have k200d but I think it's the same for k20d.
Most probably you moved the aperature ring on the lens from the A position.
There's a button on the inner ring (with aperatures markings), push that button all the way in and, at the same time, turn that ring CCW until the aperature mark points at A.
I just experimented with mine and was getting that F--
Hope it helps.

It doesn't matter what mode the camera is in MF or AF, it will show the error.

If you use the aperture ring on the lens to set the aperture, the camera will show F--, this happens if you shot with manual aperture ring. IF you set it to A on the aperture ring, you can control the aperture number from the camera, and it will show the correct F number on display.
