I just got an *ist DS body and I need a really cheap lens to start out with it before I can afford to get the 16-45. I was thinking of the Takumar 55 f/1.4 or whatever it is, since I saw something like that for around $20. If I get any of those kinds of lenses, do I need an adapter though?

Takumars are M42 screwmount lenses. So you will need a screwmount adapter for them to work on your DSLR.

the 50mm f2 its a k mount so you don't need an adapter but be careful it might stick to your camera for a long long time even after you could afford a more expensive lens

That doesn't sound very reassuring.

Any other better K mount primes or zooms that are cheap?

You could look at the ratings and average prices given in the lens database here on the site. That will give you a ballpark estimate on the costs for the different lenses available.

Pentax F 35-70mm. Fairly inexpensive, fairly sharp. Has a closse focus setting. You can usually get one on ebay for about $40-50. Check out the reviews > Pentax Lens Review Database - 35-70mm F3.5-4.5

The F35-70mm is one of my favorite walk around lens.

I think you read "redpigeons" post a bit wrong.
What i think he was trying to say is that is a very good lens for the price ... and you will enjoying using it so much ... you wan't want to take it off the camera.

I suggest checking out the Lens Review Database on here ... and also the M-Club thread in the SLR Lens Discussion section ... excellent information in there ... and will help make up your mind as well.

Not very wide...

I'll check out the sale forums for K mount lenses.

Would the vivtar 28 2.8 need an adapter?

Ohhh...are you sure though, because when I made the *ist DS thread archive there were a few about K mount lenses being stuck on the camera.

sorry I guess my English confused you

the 50 mm f/2 is a simple lens but in my opinion is one of the greatest lenses to have. its the kit lens from the k1000. you can also get the 28-80 for less then $50. this one is not as great thou .. its the kit lens form my MZ-7 but its a good lens to start

I have both of these lenses. Either would be a great first lens - but for different reasons. The M50/2 will always give you sharp images with excellent color rendering. The F35~70 is a fine lens, slightly less sharp (as a zoom) but nothing to sneeze at - but more versatile than a prime.

In fact, if you want to try the 35~70 PM me - I'm willing to pass it along for a fair price.

if you want a zoom lens, get the 18-55mm kit lens, about $80, not bad to start with. if you want a cheap prime lens, try something that's not Pentax or Aashi brand. Like sears or vivitar. I have 2 sears K mount manual lenses, 50mm 1.7 and 28mm 2.8, paid like $50 for both, picture is similar to the Pentax brand, not bad to start with. also got a Sears screw mount 55mm f1.4 lens, i like it better than the famous Takumar 50mm f1.4. so alot of good lens around for low budge.

Ok so I found a 50mm f/2 for $20! and I got it, and I'm possibly getting a 35-80 for only $30...so what other lenses should I get? (also posting links to threads in the sale forums would help, I'm having difficulties there).
