My only question is, will I grow tired of the f/4 at 70mm quickly, or is this a good investment for a hobbyist??

Otherwise i'll just save for a DA* 50-135 f/2,8 .... HA
Or, just get a prime to give you fast portrait range options - a cheap manual focus 50 for less than $50, or the FA50, or maybe the DA70/2.4. That plus the Sigma 17-70 should cover quite a lot of shooting situations.

Jawn Doe-

Definately love the 50mm f/2 for it's price, and old school feel.

As for a new lens, I think i'm actually going to save for the Sigma 17-70. It's designed for APS sensor so the wide is wide, and the 17mm will me great. Saw some tests and color, contrast looks awesome. I'll be able to put up with the 70mm 4.5 for the 17mm 2.8.

Thanks for all your help guys.

So it appers as though my options have come to the sigma 2.8-4 28-70, or sigma 2.8 24-70. No Tamron or Pentax comes with same aperature rating and price range.

For some reason that 2.8-4 was very, very cheap late last year: I'd been considering one to bypass the kit lens with: the speed's a notable improvement there, ...the image quality isn't in the same league as the steady 2.8 versions, but with reviews I saw, it wasn't *terrible* for a lot of walking around purposes, considering the size and all. This is from someone who doesn't tend to expect much from zooms, compared to primes, and also likes the range a 28-70 would cover.

Since I got a free kit lens, as it turned out, I haven't given them much thought. I'll probably end up going with one of the steady-2.8 Tammies.
