Pentax 40mm f/2.8 or 16-45mm f/4 ?

I want to buy a lens to replace the kit lens that comes with the K100D.

I want a very sharp lens and i`m thinking of the 40mm f/2.8 which seems to have very good critics everywhere.

If i`d buy a 16-45mm f/4 ,will it be able to deliver as sharp and need pics as the 40mm?
I`d have more range but like i said my main purpose is to find the sharpest things around for a reasonable price.

I'm really a prime fanatic, but I have the 16-45 and it compares favorably with prime lenses. This is the first zoom that convinced me that I could actually use it instead of a prime.

I have no experience with the 40mm, but I guarantee that the 16-45 is a quantum leap over the kit lens.

Very different animals. The 16-45 is a very versatile lens. The 40 Limited is "Brutally" sharp. I have used the 16-45 lens professionally and will be published with it. It compares favorably to the Canon 17-40L lens which I own as well. If you must choose...Go for the Pentax 16-45 lens for now.

Here is a sample from a shoot done with the 16-45 lens:

I think it depends on what you want to use it for.
If you are sticking to people shots, then the 40 2.8 would work very well.... although not as convenient as a zoom, you just move closer/ further away from the subject.
another lens that you should consider if you are sticking to people shots is the 50mm 1.4

If you are going to do a lot more with the lens, then the 16-45 should work well. but remember, F 4 will have some limits when shooting in lower light.

good luck on your choice!

cheers

I have both lenses, and while the little Limited is - as NaClH2O would say - so sharp you have to be careful not to cut yourself, the zoom is far more versatile.

I can't tell you which to buy, because they're really not comparable. Frankly, if I were to own only one lens, it would be neither of these. Confined to one lens, I'd go with my FA 35/2 - fast, sharp and "normal" FOV.
