Surprising numbers

I was thinking how much better some of the top 50mm might be over my modest plain Jane FA35 so I went over to Photozone to see.

I know these resolution numbers are not directly comparable and that resolution isn't everything but still...

Pentax FA35 F/2 $300
F/2 2040/1867 best (F/4) 2336/2137

Zeiss Distagon ZF T* 35mm f/2 $825 on Pentax mount
F/2 2215/1766 best (F/4) 2321/1987

Pentax FA 50 F/1.4 $200
F/2 1870/1427 best (F/4) 2320/1941

Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM $500 on Canon mount
F/2 1969/1716 best (F/5.6) 2128/1873

Zeiss Planar ZF T* 50mm f/1.4 $517 on Nikon mount
F/2 2006/1796 best (F/4) 2319/2044

Conclusion: My FA 35 - I think I'll keep it.

if the FoV fits the bill for your subjects then that's great, I have FA35/2 too (bought last summer) and like it a lot, but it's a bit wide for portraits which is where the 50 is a useful focal length on dSLR IMO

on photozone
pentax v.good = 1750, excellent = 2050
nikon v.good = 1650, excellent = 1950
canon v.good = 2000, excellent = 2350

Indeed a great lens... It simply amazes me how compact and reliable it is.

Regarding the resolution, does that mean there is no gains pushing it past f/4 ??

I ask this, because I was never sure what the optimal aperture was in this lens...

Why not just have a look at the Photozone review?

Pentax SMC-FA 35mm f/2 AL - Review / Test Report

...yes - it looks like f4 is as good as it gets in terms of resolution

I'd love the see them review the Takumars ... and see what the results are with those.
A shame they only test the newer lenses.

Just a quick and dirty subjective eyeball comparison:

I have the TAK f/2 55mm and it is obviously not as sharp as the FA 35.

I have the TAK 105 and a new Sigma 105 macro. The Sigma is sharper but not by a huge amount but it's noticeable.

The Taks are 35 years old so who knows what I'm really seeing.
