500-600mm mirror lens

I'm looking into getting a 5-600mm mirror lens, does anyone have a suggestion? I really don't want to spend an arm and a leg either.....

everyone's opinion is greatly appreciated!

1. Tamron SP 500mm f8, 55BB or 55B which will require an adaptall 2 mount (~$150)
2. Tokina 500mm (~$125-145)
3. Vivitar 600mm (~$125-195)

Those are used estimates as these are used lenses.

or one of the Russian 500mm f5.6

there are lesser AND cheaper options.

There are also more expensive options as well.

can a 2x converter be used with any mirror lens? Is there anything specific I should look for in a mirror lens?

I have a tokina that is PK specific. Only Tamron used the adaptall, it was proprietary I believe. These are tough lenses to use, mine barely sees any action. Still, 500mm when you need it....

The Tokina and Sigma are specific. They can be used the TC with varying result.
There are 2 or 3 threads about using mirror lenses from a few months back. See if you can find them. I will post some links later as well.

To really get into Mirror lenses, one has to understand the nature of them and their limitations and try to use their strengths. Many do not and end up disappointed.
