Pentax DA 55-300mm, very decent 300mm Performance

The corners aren't as tack sharp as the center, but at 300mm for its price, it is the lens to beat imo (and I've used quite a many in that range).

You have confirmed my suspicion that this lens is a very capable performer for its price. Too bad the focus throw is so long - it slows down AF speed.

btw I like the shot of the mountain.

I recently purchased this lens and have been blown away, compared to the similarly pricedl Nikon 70-300 ED (which is a ful frame lens and should do better) it is easilly far superior.

And the longer focus throw helps for more precise focusing. If you are talking action shots I can understand, however for most work I'd rather have a precise focusing instrument. I've used lenses that have a short focusing throw and getting that perfect focus can be a real pain in the arse.
