M 50mm 1:2 soft?

I went for a walk about at lunchtime today with my K200D and 50mm M lens.

I havent really used it much before, however im pretty disappointed with my shots, they all seem excessively soft to me. Now the obvious answer is i didnt focus correctly, however, i seem to manage sharp shots with my M 28mm 1:2.8 lens. I use the focus confirmation in the viewfinder as a stopping point, which i then dbl check by rotating through it a 2nd time. so what am i doing wrong?

Could it also be the cloudy weather combined with my late morning double shot coffee hit resulting in unsteady hands? This hasnt been a problem before when using the 28mm. I don't know...

I guess I just felt like having a bit of a rant about all my soft photos, haha. Also keen to hear ideas on what I can do to stop it happening again...

here they are

the 1 sharp one...

the rest...

Hi

At the size you have posted the photos I cannot tell if they are soft or not.

What you should do is to test the lens by putting it on a tripod and manually focussing progressively(ignore the focus confirmation), then you will be able to tell if it is your technique or the lens.

Also what aperture are you using (i dont have an exif viewer on my work computer)? At f2.0 you will need to be spot on with your focussing, the DOF will be narrow.

Also, are these jpegs straight from the camera ?

Finally the M 50mm 2.0 is not the best loved of the 50mm normal lenses, but this is because it is the slowest. Optically is it a fine lens, but will be sharpest stopped down to 5.6-8

I agree, far too small to tell what is going on. Post some crops (without resizing). But be sure to post the part that is actually where the focus was - hopefully showing a little in front and a little in back so we can tell it really *is* the sharpest area.

Testing side by side with the M50/1.7, the f/2 version is definitely quite a bit softer up to f/4 or so; after that differences are much less noticeable.
