OK, this changes everything, doesn't it.
If it was in focus, the sharpness would be better, don't you think?
Get a good tripod and use it.
Consider getting a remote release as well.
You will find that with macro, you are often working with longer than normal shutter speeds, the tripod and remote will help you stabilize the camera.
Auto focus is not your friend when doing macro, use manual focus.
You need to stop down the lens (Larger f#) to secure depth of field, though the desire for DOF may be mitigated by the desire to have an out of focus background.
Depth of field with macro is very small though.
And practice. Macro is not difficult, but it is not P&S easy either.
