My DFA100 Macro is too sharp for taking picture of ppl... and your pic doesn't seem like you got it in focus at all.

I would also suggest you manual focus with that lens, this lens take quite a trip while try to auto focus.

1) Try focusing accurately
2) Try stopping down a bit.

I don't have this lens... but with any macro the two rules are
1. no auto focus
2. no open aperture... I always try to stop down as mach as the light allows me.

this lens is on my list as I am going to to Costa Rica in a few months.
a fried just got back from there with that lens and the pictures he took are just unbelievable . if he will let me I will try to post some samples

and if you do attempt to do this you will NEED a tripod. Even the slightest movement of the camera can affect your shot.

well anything out of focus will of course give you that blurry/softness.
so look at your viewfinder carefully when you are focusing. Do not too rely on the Auto Focus as you get very close to the subject.

Macro is not really a point & shoot thing, it really take good lighting and strong hand/tripod.
Choosing the right aperture setting is very important as well, when you get close to the subject, the depth of view will get narrow so a smaller aperture will be needed usually i start with f8 min and getting to f22 is not unusual. (which again, good lighting will help greatly)

have fun shooting.

When shooting macro, you really should focus manually to guarantee you are focusing exactly where you want.

You should also stop *way* down (f/16 or more) because otherwise, when shooting macro, the depth of field is far to small. I think that's what you are really seeing here - not so much that the sharp parts aren't that sharp, but you aren't used to seeing large parts of the image out of focus, because P&S cameras usually make everything be in focus all the time (it works that way because their sensor are much smaller).

And you should use a tripod when shooting macro. It's way too easy for small camera movements to have a big effects on the picture at close distances, and the SR system doesn't work too well at very short distances, either.

OK, this changes everything, doesn't it.
If it was in focus, the sharpness would be better, don't you think?
Get a good tripod and use it.
Consider getting a remote release as well.
You will find that with macro, you are often working with longer than normal shutter speeds, the tripod and remote will help you stabilize the camera.

Auto focus is not your friend when doing macro, use manual focus.
You need to stop down the lens (Larger f#) to secure depth of field, though the desire for DOF may be mitigated by the desire to have an out of focus background.
Depth of field with macro is very small though.

And practice. Macro is not difficult, but it is not P&S easy either.

I never could get macro shots in focus when hand holding this lens. It was me, not the lens. That said, I still did not want a macro that I had to put on a tripod every time I took a picture. I sold it...

You seem to say it is sharp but not as sharp as you would expect.
Why not you shoot the same subject at F3.5, 4, 5.6 to see it sharpens when stepped down.

This was from FA100mm shot at F2.8
