Big brother has arrived!!

Dave sold his 500mm lens to me to upgrade to a 1000mm Takumar. The box arrived yesterday. Unfortunately the weather has been awful with rain and freezing rain (wish I could ship that to Austrailia) so the lens will go untested for awhile.

I promised myself I wouldn't buy another lens without selling one (and I've stuck to that since last summer) but this deal was too good to pass up.

It's almost impossible to give a sense of scale with this monster. It's a tripod only lens. Just too heavy to hand hold. Much heavier/longer than the Bigma was but a lot faster too. I've tried it on the AF1.7TC (850mm f7.7), it will focus just fine and work in AV. So a little slower to handle but I can't wait to go chasing deer or birds.

So here's the big and the small.
Takumar 28mm f3.5
Takumar 500mm f4.5

Oh and before it was shipped, here's the 1000mm with it's smaller brother.

A couple of notes on the lens. The forward ring is the aperture dial. It's about 3 cms wide, not the little 'girlie' rings on other lenses. The infinity focus is about 700 ft so this is one lens you can use the M42> K Mount adapter with the collar. Makes it easier to use the TC and short the contacts for AV. mounts on the camera easier too.

That's impressive! But I really like to see the 1000/8 in person. That one looks like a monster

LOL. You got shortchanged! His is twice as big!
It's nice that yours has an A setting. I don't think the 1000mm had it, but he can take a photo halfway across the county ;-)
Post up pics when you get the chance...

The 500mm has no A setting. Just using a the M42 witha collar allows the camera contacts to short out and use Av on the camera. A would be sweet but this works fine.

I can't believe how small and insignificant this lens makes a 70-200 f/2.8 look

Well at least wannabe's in my case. I have a couple of critter shots I like but I want to do a bit more hunting this summer.

Can't let Borno, Wildman and Marc have all the fun!

That 1000mm is longer than my leg. Seriously.
