Should I buy an SMC FA 28-80mm f3.5-5.6 AL for my DS?

I can get a refurbed one for less than $50 with a 6 month warranty.

Currently I have the 18-55 kit lens my DS came with. I don't know much, but I know there won't be a huge zoom difference between the two, but I understand the ALs are very nice...

Un til I can scrape up enough to get a telephoto, or some primes... would this suit me? I plan to shoot event photos, outdoors shots, family shots, some landscapes...

Is it this one?

Its based off the Tamron design of the same specs. I'd say you should try and find some manual 70..80-200..210 zoom on ebay. You should get better focal length coverage. Or better yet, look for a 135mm prime. SMC-M, Takumar, Vivitar, Ricoh are all good bets.

Yes, that looks like it. I'm basically asking if this would be a cheap/better lens than my kit lens until I can get some others. Or, another way to ask: Is the Kit lens adequate for taking great pictures in this focal range? Or will I be looking to upgrade, and is this an upgrade? (I know nothing about lenses.)

So, what's the import tariff for a $35 lens coming from Canada to US?

And, more importantly... would it even be worth it? That is... is tht ;ens any better than what I've got in the kit lens, or would the modest investment help tide me over until I get a chance to get something more. Money is an issue.

It is an ok lens but be prepared to stop it down abit. It can be soft at lower fstops at least 5.6 at 28mm.

I picked up the FA 28-90 for $20 on ebay, so I imagine you could do better than $50 -- I believe both are kit lenses that came with some of Pentax's autofocus 35mm SLR's during the 90's, so they are fairly plentiful and cheap used. Personally, I wouldn't pay a premium for a warranty on a cheap used lens -- you don't often hear of Pentax lenses failing. Most of the ones I use are at least 40 years old, and they're still going strong.

It says $10.85USD to ship to the US. If you insist on the 28-80, get the AL version. The pic above. That one was designed by tamron but with Pentax SMC coatings and electronics.

IMO, you are spending alotta $$ on was is alot of overlap. If you can't afford the Pentax DA 50-200mm, see if you can find a SIGMA DC 50-200.

If you are interested in saving a bit more, you can try ebaying for a 135mm prime or some of those old 70..80-200 zooms.

Consider the FA J 75-300. Not the world's most stellar lens, but a nice performer with good coverage for those of us on tight budgets.
