Well, I guess my collection of lenses from the film days will, at a minimum, get me a much wider maximum aperature than the typical zooms that come on the KX camera packages out there.

Just a little reality check:
Do you have a quality m42 arsenal, or do you just remember it that way? I pulled out an old Vivitar or two that I thought were simply fantastic, but that belong in the garbage.
Also, forget your preconceived notions of focal length and point of view as to your current lenses. You will have so much fun that the fact that your 28 is now acting like a 42 won't bother you at all, and if you're like me will still be using a 50 prime as your "normal" lens.
Finally, don't dis the 18-50 kit lens. There's a forum here, The Kit Lens Club, which shows the OUTSTANDING results it's capable of. And I guarantee you:
Give you and me a $1,000 prime and we couldn't match the artistry of most of them.
